Appraisal Organizations to Debut Conservation Easements Certificate Program

DENVER - The Appraisal Institute, a professional membership organization and recognized leader in real estate appraisal education, is set to introduce a new certificate program and educational offering on Conservation Easements. The four and a half day program, Valuation of Conservation Easements, is being held October 1-5 in Denver at the Crowne Plaza Hotel and Conference Center and coincides with the Land Trust Alliance’s (LTA) 2007 Rally Conference. The advanced program is a joint effort of the Appraisal Institute, American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers, American Society of Appraisers and the LTA. Participants completing program and passing a final examination will be issued a Certificate of Completion.

“Appraisers who earn the Certificate of Completion will be taught how to develop an effective scope of work for a conservation easement valuation assignment,” explained Terry Dunkin, MAI, SRA, president of the Appraisal Institute. “In addition, program participants will acquire new skills and learn different techniques and requirements relative to conservation easements.”

The need for a certificate program arose last year after Congress passed the Pension Protection Act, which includes a series of reforms relating to conservation easements and other non-cash charitable contributions. According to the legislation, appraisers performing these valuations must present verifiable education and experience to meet the new definition of a “qualified appraiser.”

“There is a notable and heightened demand for real estate appraisal services among land trust officials pertaining to conservation easement donations,” noted Dunkin. “The Conservation Easements certificate program is designed to help appraisers demonstrate that they have the necessary education required to perform this type of valuation service.”

The Valuation of Conservation Easements program will be taught by developers Charles (Sandy) Rex III, MAI, and Frank Harrison, MAI, SRA. Future locations and dates for the program are currently being scheduled. For more information visit: www.appraisalinstitute.org.
